He Tai Ohinga Maro
Hillcrest High School has accepted the mauri to host Te Tai Ohinga Maro, a festival of kapa haka. It will be held on August 31st, 2018 at Hillcrest High School and Tauwhare School have accepted the invitation to attend and perform. This is a huge honour for us!
This is a celebration of kapa haka, tikanga and te reo Māori and is primarily aimed at schools who are developing their kapa haka programmes, as opposed to those that are operating at a competitive level. It is an opportunity for schools to build confidence without the pressure of competing.
15 secondary schools from the Tainui area have been invited to participate. There will be representation from the whānau of the Māori King, Kiingi Tuheitia and support from Waikato-Tainui, Radio Tainui and Waikato University.
He Tai Ohinga is an opportunity for all of the kura in the Hillcrest Kahui Ako to collaborate in a genuine cultural context, building the mana of Ngāti Hauā and of our Kahui Ako.
Matua Heemi Walker of Hillcrest High School came to visit us on the 25th of June, as well as two former Tauwhare students - Puhangawai Wheki and Raumati Beazley. It was fabulous to see our former students and to have their help and expertise. They came to work with our Kapa Haka roopu to help us prepare for the upcoming Tai Ohinga Maro festival and you can see the photos and hear the songs we are learning for the pōwhiri here.
Everyone is welcome to be involved and we would to see our whanau there supporting us in our performance.
If you have any questions, please do contact Kirsty Gilroy, kirsty.gilroy@tauwhare.school.nz
